It was two months in the past that the young forward stood on the Stadium of Light pitch, seeming perplexed as his coach admonished him over not reading a through-ball. During that period, as Villa failed to win in six, it wasn't clear whether Rogers' form were a sign or the source for the team's broader struggles.

“Following Rogers' second strike… Emery discarded his jacket, extended his arms, and let out a triumphant roar.”

This weekend, in contrast, the touchline reaction proved to be much more joyous. When the England international curled home his second strike to reclaim Villa's lead, Emery tore off his coat, spread his arms and shouted in triumph. The team were on their way to ten wins in a row and after failing to win their opening six fixtures, are somehow a mere three points behind table-toppers Arsenal.

Is Aston Villa Legitimate Title Contenders?

It remains an exceptionally difficult query to address. Past precedent, the perceived status of the club, argues against it. Additionally, their performances haven't been completely commanding during this run, despite the fact the victories have piled up.

Per the data, twice all season have Villa had an expected goals figure significantly higher than the opposition. For a side which has strung together a ten-match winning streak, Villa appear curiously susceptible – yet currently the fine lines are going in their favour.

The Reliant Strategy

The prevailing tactic seems to be to engage in a shootout with the opposition and then rely on their talisman to rescue them with some crisp finishes. This was the case at Leeds, it occurred against West Ham, and again when facing United.

Rogers' first goal originated from a superb shot, arced right inside the upright from a wide position. For his second acted as a slight scruffier version of the opener as he seized on an Ollie Watkins lay-off.

Can It Last?

Common sense dictates no. Against United, the opposition registered more shots and more direct attempts. The team has triumphed in eight consecutive games by the narrowest of margins. The defence has been breached in all except one of those matches.

A statistical correction may well be the biggest rival they will encounter as the season progresses. The forward, in all likelihood, cannot maintain thrashing the football past despairing goalkeepers week in, week out.

A Case for Belief

Could it be a different scenario whereby, rather than results trending towards performances, the level of play rises to match the results. Important figures might still return to peak condition.

• The main striker might resume finding the net regularly.
• The attacking talent could transform into the player he showed at Borussia Dortmund.
• The injured centre-backs are set to come back from the treatment room, strengthening an occasionally vulnerable defence.

This could contain the seeds for a sustained push, however, it is improbable cannot keep relying on a single individual.

Enjoying the Ride

Yet, this is a surprise. Nobody thought Villa would occupy third at Christmas. And certainly back in October, few could imagine Rogers now would be at the forefront of a championship pursuit while establishing himself as a vital Three Lions star.

This winning streak is to be savoured precisely because it appears so improbable. When Rogers faced the home supporters after the match orchestrating the applause, he appeared to be loving the experience. A feeling he has rightly earned. Such periods are uncommon in the sport and ought to be celebrated.
