Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the right to contest specific calls made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
